Bremer CDU Leader Prioritizes Candidate Qualifications Over Gender

Wiebke Winter, the leading CDU candidate from Bremen, has expressed her belief that focusing solely on gender when selecting a successor to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is misguided. In an interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (noz), Winter, who is also a member of the CDU's executive committee, stated, "We need to discuss what profile this person must have, rather than focusing on heads or genders." She articulated her expectation that the next president should offer the nation a narrative to unite around, akin to a moment that inspires collective belief. "That is more important than the question of gender," she added.
In recent weeks, the CDU leadership has shifted away from an earlier commitment to nominate a female candidate. Meanwhile, the SPD continues to advocate for a female representative, and the CSU is also pushing for the same. Within the CSU, Ilse Aigner, the President of the Bavarian State Parliament, is considered a strong candidate.
