Bofinger Rejects Austrian Pension Model for Heavy Workers

Member of the Pension Commission Warns of Delimitation Issues and Bureaucracy

Economist Peter Bofinger has voiced his opposition to the heavy worker pension model proposed by Dirk Wiese, the parliamentary manager of the SPD faction, which draws inspiration from Austria. Bofinger stated, "The Austrian model would lead to legal disputes and significant delimitation problems regarding which employees are classified as heavy workers," in an interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (noz). He emphasized that such a system would be highly bureaucratic and impractical to implement.

Bofinger also criticized the common Austrian practice of assessing physical strain based on calories burned, arguing that this approach neglects mental stress and joint wear and tear.

He pointed out that individuals who have engaged in heavy physical labor typically struggle to meet the threshold of 45 contribution years and are often retired before reaching that mark. "The people who retire with 45 contribution years are predominantly those who do not perform strenuous physical work," Bofinger remarked.

To address the needs of affected workers, the commission is advocating for targeted hardship regulations. "If individuals in their specific profession can no longer work due to physical impairments, they should be given the option for early retirement," he suggested.
