CDU Calls for Mobility Allowance Amid Rising Fuel Prices

In light of soaring fuel prices, the CDU's worker wing is advocating for financial relief targeted at lower and middle-income groups. Dennis Radtke, the head of the Christian Democratic Workers' Association, proposed that individuals earning less than the median income of €54,000 annually should receive an annual mobility allowance of €500. He also suggested an additional €100 for each minor child.

Radtke emphasized that neither fuel discounts nor price caps effectively address the needs of those struggling the most. "A mobility allowance for specific income groups would be a more appropriate solution, as it directly benefits those who require support," he stated in an interview with the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.

The discussion surrounding potential relief measures for fuel prices has intensified since the end of the fuel discount program in late June. However, Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) has dismissed further initiatives, citing budget constraints. "We implemented a very costly tool with the fuel price brake, which cost us billions of euros," Reiche remarked at the end of July. "These funds are not currently available in the federal budget."

Additionally, the new Minister of Transport, Steffen Bilger (CDU), has also rejected the idea of reinstating a fuel discount. The ongoing debate reflects the challenges faced by many households as they grapple with increasing fuel costs, prompting calls for more targeted financial assistance.
