The first full weekend of August is shaping up to be one of the busiest of the summer season. From Friday, August 7, to Sunday, August 9, millions of Italians are expected to travel to vacation destinations, leading to significant congestion on major highways.

Friday's Traffic Challenges

The weekend commenced with notable delays on the A14 Bologna-Taranto route. On the morning of Friday, August 7, traffic jams reached up to 10 kilometers between Val Vibrata and Pineto, heading towards Pescara. This was due to necessary repairs on the road surface following a truck fire that occurred the previous evening. To facilitate safety measures, traffic was diverted to a single lane, with operators providing water to stranded motorists. According to Autostrade per l’Italia, Friday is forecasted to experience red alert conditions for much of the day, particularly along routes leading to popular tourist destinations.

Peak Traffic on Saturday

Saturday, August 8, is expected to be the most congested day, marked with a black alert for traffic both in the morning from 7 AM to 1 PM and in the afternoon from 1 PM to 7 PM. The situation is anticipated to improve in the evening, transitioning to a red alert between 7 PM and 9 PM. On Sunday, August 9, morning traffic will still be heavy under a red alert, but conditions are expected to gradually improve to a yellow alert by the afternoon, leading to normal traffic by evening. For travelers, avoiding departure on Saturday morning may be the best strategy to minimize time spent in traffic.

Weather Forecast: Storms in the North and Rising Temperatures

Weather conditions will also be variable. On Friday, August 7, a surge of cooler air at altitude is set to bring thunderstorms to the North, particularly affecting Lombardy, Piedmont, and southern Veneto, with the potential for intense rainfall, strong winds, and hail. As the day progresses, these weather events may extend into the central Apennine regions, while the South is expected to remain mostly dry, aside from some showers in the mountains. Starting Saturday, a subtropical high pressure system will strengthen, leading to more stable conditions and temperatures rising above average across much of Italy. As of Thursday, August 6, self-service gasoline on the national road network was approximately 1.999 euros per liter, while the average price on highways rose to 2.084 euros per liter. Diesel continues to benefit from a government discount of 17 cents on excise duties, with recent increases followed by slight decreases, now just above 2.09 euros per liter on regular roads and around 2.17 euros per liter on highways.
