Niedersachsen's CDU Sends Urgent Letter to Prime Minister Olaf Lies

Sebastian Lechner Critiques Justice Minister: "Questioning Parliamentary Oversight Rights"

The leader of the CDU in Lower Saxony, Sebastian Lechner, has expressed serious concerns regarding the actions of Justice Minister Kathrin Wahlmann (SPD). In a critical letter addressed to Prime Minister Olaf Lies, which has been made available to the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (noz), Lechner stated: "With great concern, I observe that a practice is developing within the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice that calls into question the constitutional significance of parliamentary oversight rights."

Lechner highlighted multiple instances where Wahlmann failed to adequately inform the parliament in a timely manner about significant events. He pointed to two cases involving escaped criminals and a delegation trip by the Justice Minister to the Baltic region as examples of this lack of communication. Additionally, he raised concerns about the "contradictory redaction practices of the Justice Ministry" regarding documents related to an ongoing investigation into a suspected corrupt prosecutor from Hanover.

In his letter to Prime Minister Lies, Lechner emphasized, "The described events convey an overall impression that parliamentary oversight rights are not understood as a self-evident part of our constitutional order." He urged Lies to take action within his directive authority to amend the current practices.
