Property Tax Exemptions for Retirees in 2025: Are You Eligible?
In 2025, retirees may qualify for property tax exemptions based on age and income. Learn if you are eligible for relief from increasing local taxes.

As the cost of living continues to rise, the property tax is set to increase by at least 2% in 2025, adding financial pressure on homeowners. However, certain retirees may find relief from this local tax burden. This article explores the exemptions available for eligible retirees this coming year.
Complete Exemption for Seniors Aged 75 and Over
If you turn 75 on or before January 1, 2025, you might qualify for a full exemption from property tax on your primary residence and even a secondary residence, provided your income falls below specific thresholds.
According to the General Tax Code, the income limit is set at €12,679 for a single person (the first tax share), with an additional €3,386 for each additional half-share. For couples, the income ceiling rises to €19,451 for the year 2025.
Individuals aged between 65 and 74 with similar income levels will receive a reduction of €100 on their property tax.

Special Cases for Recipients of Specific Allowances
Retirees receiving the Old Age Solidarity Allowance (Aspa) or the Additional Disability Allowance (Asi) will automatically have their property tax eliminated, without any additional income conditions.
This exemption applies even if you reside in a nursing home while still owning your home. Furthermore, if you stop receiving these allowances, the exemption will continue for two years, gradually decreasing over the subsequent two years.
For retirees with disabilities who receive the Disability Allowance (AAH), similar exemptions are available under the same income conditions as those for individuals over 75.
Make sure to review your eligibility before the end of summer, as property tax notices will be issued soon. These exemptions can significantly impact your annual budget.
In Summary
In 2025, retirees over 75 with incomes under €12,679 (for individuals) or €19,451 (for couples) may qualify for a property tax exemption. Recipients of Aspa or Asi are automatically exempt, as are AAH beneficiaries under similar income conditions.
