Remarkable Railway Bridges: A Journey Through Engineering Marvels

Germany is home to some of the most significant railway bridges in the world, showcasing engineering prowess from the 19th century. Among these, the Müngstener Brücke stands out as the tallest railway bridge in Germany, soaring 107 meters above the valley floor. Constructed between 1894 and 1897, this monumental steel arch bridge spans 170 meters and was built using a cantilever method without scaffolding. Originally named the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke, it was erected by the Gustavsburg bridge construction firm of MAN and remains a testament to innovative engineering.
The Rheinbrücke in Worms is another notable structure, stretching over 900 meters. This bridge has historical significance, as it connects the city of Worms, which became part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1815, to the industrial center along the Rhine. The construction of the Riedbahn initially facilitated transport only to the right bank of the river, requiring ferry services for 30 years. It wasn't until 1900 that the bridge, featuring arch trusses, was inaugurated, marking a significant advancement in railway connectivity.
In Wuppertal, the Sonnborner Brücke, which opened in 1914, uniquely crosses the Wuppertal Suspension Railway. A postcard from 1915 captures this bridge alongside three other modes of transportation: the newly operational suspension railway, a tram, and an airship. Additionally, the first Ravenna Bridge, established in the 1880s, features a delicate design with sandstone pillars and a steel framework. The current incarnation, completed in 1927, boasts nine arches and rests on foundations made of rammed concrete.
The Kölner Dombrücke, often referred to humorously as the "mouse trap" due to its cage-like appearance, was completed in 1859. This 400-meter bridge was the first permanent crossing of the Rhine north of Basel, linking the burgeoning railway networks on either side of the river while also serving as a road bridge. Although its wrought-iron lattice construction was effective under railway loads, the increasing volume of traffic necessitated its replacement by the Hohenzollern Bridge in 1911.
The Wutachbrücke, part of the Sauschwänzlebahn railway line inaugurated in 1890, presents unique geological challenges. This 107-meter long and 28-meter high bridge features three so-called fish-belly girders, designed to navigate the region's hilly terrain. The railway, named for its winding path, was constructed with military considerations in mind.
In his book, "Deutsche Eisenbahnbrücken in historischen Ansichten," author Jörg Koch explores the contemporary fascination with these engineering masterpieces. The book features 135 bridges accompanied by around 150 illustrations over 160 pages, priced at €29.90. These postcards serve as a reminder of the cultural significance of these structures, many of which have been destroyed or replaced over time.
