Unveiled in 1959, this remarkable vehicle showcases the technical prowess of Carlo Abarth alongside the imaginative vision of German designer Luigi "Lutz" Colani. The result is a coupe with groundbreaking aesthetics, engineered to challenge aerodynamic norms even before facing its competitors.
Collaboration Between Abarth and Colani
During the late 1950s, Carlo Abarth focused on enhancing the performance of small-displacement vehicles. He believed that achieving higher speeds required more than just increased power; hence, he paid significant attention to aerodynamics. His cars, often equipped with engines ranging from 350 to 1,300 cc, set numerous international records thanks to their efficient body designs.
In 1957, Abarth commissioned Colani to create an experimental body based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider platform. Following an accident involving an earlier Abarth-Alfa Romeo prototype, Colani completely reimagined the vehicle, leading to the creation of the iconic 1300 Berlinetta, which debuted in 1959.
The car immediately stands out with its design, markedly different from the sports cars of its era. Colani implemented his "biodynamic" philosophy, characterized by soft, flowing shapes inspired by nature.
The front features a long, slender hood that echoes some of Pininfarina's design explorations, while the distinctive double-bubble roofline pays homage to Abarth's sporty heritage. Even more innovative is the rear, crafted to minimize turbulence and enhance stability at high speeds.
Exceptional Performance
The Berlinetta is powered by a 1.3-liter engine from Alfa Romeo, generating approximately 81 kW (110 hp). Weighing in at just 780 kilograms, it boasts impressive performance figures. With its excellent power-to-weight ratio and highly aerodynamic body, this sleek vehicle can reach a top speed of around 210 km/h.
The dynamic capabilities of the Berlinetta are further demonstrated on the Nürburgring, where it can complete a lap in under ten minutes.
