Introducing the Range Rover GT: A New Electric Crossover

Land Rover has unveiled its latest addition to the Range Rover lineup: the GT, an electric crossover designed with a sleek profile. This fifth model aims to fill a niche between coupes, sedans, and SUVs, aligning with Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) strategy to further penetrate the luxury segment.

Martin Limpert, head of the Range Rover brand, emphasized the intention behind the GT's design, stating, "We wanted it to complement our existing models, not just be another SUV. We focused on driving pleasure over long distances and transcontinental journeys, all while staying true to the Range Rover vision."

The GT's proportions have been showcased through a camouflaged prototype, which features modernist interior elements reflective of the production version. It is the first vehicle built on JLR's Electric Modular Architecture (EMA), which has allowed for a lower battery pack and the ideal dimensions for a grand tourer. Lee Perry, JLR's production design lead, noted, "We have been designing this vehicle for years. Only with the arrival of the EMA were we able to realize it." Additionally, a hybrid version is planned for the future.

The interior design mirrors the same reductive principles seen in the vehicle's exterior, emphasizing purity, precision, and understated modernity. Alex Watkin, chief designer for Range Rover interiors, described the space as having an open plan that is skillfully divided. The dashboard features an architectural design with a horizontal bar that spans the width of the vehicle, concealing the air vents. This bar is complemented by a wide, slim OLED screen positioned above the dashboard in place of a traditional driver’s instrument cluster.

JLR's focus on a minimalist design has led to the centralization of many controls on the main screen, while still retaining some buttons on the steering wheel. The company promises enhanced voice command access to functions compared to previous models, reflecting the GT's commitment to technology. The dashboard's upper section is crafted from a mesh fabric that possesses acoustic properties, eliminating the need for speaker openings. The seats are upholstered in Ultrafabrics, a synthetic leather described as "luxury with discretion," which is lighter and odorless compared to traditional leather.

Despite its lower stance compared to other models, the GT retains quintessential Range Rover features, including a commanding driving position with a lowered dashboard that ensures good visibility over the hood. Reports suggest that rear seat space is comparable to that of the larger Range Rover model, and the vehicle is designed to handle off-road conditions effectively. Limpert remarked, "There are vehicles with off-road capabilities, others with a low roofline and attractive design, but there is nothing that brings all of this together in the way we envision."
