In a Chinese automotive sector dominated by a fierce price war, Leapmotor emerges as an example of resilience and growth. The electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer has indeed doubled its sales last year, reaching nearly 300,000 units, and has maintained profitability in its domestic market – an achievement not to be taken for granted in such a competitive context. This solid performance represents the springboard for a global expansion plan that promises to transform Leapmotor into one of the leading players in the automotive industry.

The Strategic Partnership with Stellantis

At the heart of this strategy is the joint venture with Stellantis, the automotive group that holds a 21% stake in Leapmotor. This alliance has opened the doors to international opportunities, allowing the Chinese company to access foreign markets with greater ease. Leapmotor's CEO, Zhu Jiangming, revealed that this collaboration is crucial for achieving ambitious goals: sales are projected to reach 1 million vehicles as early as next year, with a leap to 4 million units within a decade.

Such growth would propel Leapmotor among the top 10 automotive manufacturers in the world, positioning it not far from the fourth global spot held by Stellantis itself, which sold 5.6 million cars in 2024. Zhu Jiangming, during the presentation of new electric models – as captured in a Reuters photo depicting him alongside his EVs – emphasized how this expansion is part of an integrated plan that combines technological innovation and market penetration.

Expanding the Range and Innovation

To support this growth trajectory, Leapmotor plans to more than double its model lineup, increasing from the current offerings to a total of 15 by 2027. A concrete step in this direction was the launch of a new hatchback at the Munich Auto Show, an event that attracted international attention. Other models are on the way, focusing on electric vehicles that meet the needs of an increasingly sustainability-oriented global audience.

While these goals may seem implausible at first glance, the Chinese automotive sector has already demonstrated that the impossible can become reality. Just look at BYD, another Chinese giant, whose sales grew tenfold in just five years, reaching 4.2 million cars in 2024. Leapmotor appears determined to follow a similar trajectory, leveraging its agility and domestic profitability to capture market share abroad.

Future Prospects in the Global Context

In a landscape where Chinese manufacturers are redefining EV standards – with advanced technologies and competitive prices – Leapmotor positions itself as an emerging player ready to challenge established giants. The joint venture with Stellantis not only provides financial resources and know-how but also a global distribution network that could accelerate the adoption of its vehicles in Europe, America, and beyond.

As the EV market continues to evolve, facing challenges such as the price war and energy transition, Leapmotor demonstrates that with a clear vision and strategic partnerships, rapid scaling is possible. If Zhu Jiangming's plans come to fruition, by 2035 we could see a new contender among the global automotive leaders, once again confirming the dynamism of the Chinese industry.
