Mercedes is advancing its electric transition with a new generation of models built on a dedicated platform. Among these, the CLA Electric stands out for its energy performance. This German sedan has recently received significant recognition from Green NCAP, ranking it among the most suitable electric vehicles for long journeys due to its range, efficiency, and charging capabilities.

An Electric Mercedes Built for Long Distances

Despite advancements in recent years, range remains a critical factor in the adoption of electric vehicles. To win over drivers accustomed to internal combustion engines, manufacturers must offer models capable of covering long distances without frequent stops.

With its new CLA, Mercedes presents a particularly ambitious solution. The electric sedan can achieve up to 792 kilometers of range according to the WLTP cycle, thanks to an 85 kWh battery. This performance is made possible by several technical choices, including an aerodynamically optimized body and a powertrain designed to minimize energy losses.

During tests conducted by Green NCAP, the CLA 250+ managed to travel 605 kilometers before needing a recharge. The average consumption recorded during the test was an impressive 16.5 kWh/100 km, especially considering the vehicle's size, which exceeds 4.70 meters in length.

This energy efficiency enabled the model to earn five stars in the Green NCAP evaluation, which considers emissions over the entire usage cycle, not just those produced at the exhaust—nonexistent in an electric vehicle.

Fast Charging Comparable to Premium Combustion Vehicles

To simplify long trips, Mercedes focused not only on battery capacity but also on an 800-volt electrical architecture, a technology still rare in this category.

This solution significantly increases the charging power and reduces downtime during long journeys. In measurements taken by Green NCAP, the Mercedes CLA 250+ reached a peak charging power of 286 kW.

After traveling 605 kilometers, the vehicle required only 14 minutes of charging to continue its test drive to a total of 800 kilometers. Under conditions specified by Mercedes, the battery can also charge from 10 to 80% in just 23 minutes at a compatible charging station.

With this new generation of the CLA, Mercedes demonstrates that electric vehicles can now meet the demands of long-distance drivers. The combination of low consumption, high range, and rapid charging represents a major focus for the development of future electric models from the brand.

This technology will not be exclusive to the sedan, as Mercedes is already planning to integrate it into other vehicles across its lineup, including the electric GLB. The upcoming GLA may also benefit from this architecture, further enhancing the German automaker's electric offerings.
