Mercedes GLA Unveils a Bold New Look and Electric Future

Following the introduction of the new CLA, Mercedes is significantly revamping its lineup with the launch of the next-generation GLA. This premium SUV is evolving across the board: in design, technology, interior space, and powertrains. Unlike earlier electric models from the EQ family that featured a distinct identity from their combustion-engine counterparts, the new GLA opts for a more cohesive approach, adopting stylistic elements from the latest models in the brand's portfolio.

Available from launch with multiple all-electric powertrains, the GLA will also introduce a hybrid variant in 2027. This strategy highlights Mercedes' commitment to providing various technical solutions to gradually guide customers toward electrification.

A More Assertive Design Inspired by the New CLA

The updated GLA departs from its predecessor with a more contemporary and authoritative silhouette. While maintaining its compact positioning, it now boasts a length of 4.56 meters, an extended wheelbase of 61 mm, and a wider rear track. Simultaneously, its height is reduced by 20 mm, lending it a more dynamic appearance while enhancing the overall balance of its proportions.

The front fascia showcases the most significant changes. Similar to the new CLA, the GLA features a prominent vertical grille that serves as a central element of its visual identity. In electric versions, this grille is entirely closed and can be equipped with lighting made up of hundreds of luminous points. Hybrid variants retain a conventional opening for engine cooling while maintaining the same overall design.

New LED headlights incorporate a star-shaped light signature, a motif also echoed in the rear lights. Mercedes will offer various customization options, including wheel sizes ranging from 18 to 20 inches and new trims like AMG Line Plus or the Night Edition to emphasize the SUV's sporty character.

A Completely Redesigned Interior with the MBUX Superscreen

Inside, the transformation is even more pronounced. Mercedes has moved away from the previous layout in favor of a significantly modernized cabin dominated by a large digital display reminiscent of the brand's latest models.

The GLA can be equipped with the MBUX Superscreen, which combines three screens under a single glass surface. The driver benefits from a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by a 14-inch central touchscreen. An additional 14-inch screen can also be installed for the front passenger.

This new architecture also enhances passenger space, particularly in the rear seats, while the trunk volume reaches 410 liters. Electric versions additionally feature a front trunk of 107 liters, ideal for storing charging cables. With the rear seats folded in a 40/20/40 configuration, the total cargo capacity can expand to 1,400 liters.

Models equipped with the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system also retain impressive towing capabilities, reaching up to two tons—a rare figure for electric SUVs in this category.

An Ambitious Electric Range from Launch

The new Mercedes GLA is built on the MMA platform introduced by the latest CLA. This architecture, designed to accommodate various powertrains, allows the SUV to offer multiple electric variants upon its market debut.

The lineup will start with the GLA 200 electric, featuring a 58 kWh LFP battery and a motor producing 224 horsepower. The GLA 250+ will offer a more powerful option with an 85 kWh NMC battery paired with a 271-horsepower motor. Lastly, the GLA 350 4MATIC will boast two electric motors generating a combined output of 353 horsepower, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds. A fourth variant with a 71 kWh NMC battery is also slated for release in early 2027.

Utilizing an 800-volt architecture, the electric GLA inherits the advanced technologies of the CLA. The most efficient version can cover up to 657 kilometers on the WLTP cycle and supports rapid charging of up to 320 kW via direct current. Mercedes claims that a mere ten minutes on a compatible charging station can restore approximately 270 kilometers of range.

Existing 400-volt infrastructure will remain compatible through an optional converter, though maximum power will then be limited to 100 kW.

A Hybrid Powertrain Planned for 2027

Mercedes is not planning to completely phase out electrified powertrains with combustion engines just yet. Starting in 2027, the GLA will introduce a new hybrid generation featuring a novel 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine.

This engine will be paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, including a 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 22 kW electric motor integrated into a new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

This technology will enable the SUV to operate briefly in electric mode during low power demand phases. Mercedes also highlights a coasting function with the engine shut off beyond 100 km/h under certain conditions, along with energy recovery capabilities of up to 25 kW during deceleration.

Future hybrid GLA models will be available with either two or four-wheel drive.

State-of-the-Art Features

The new GLA also benefits from the latest digital advancements from Mercedes. The MBUX voice assistant now incorporates generative artificial intelligence to enhance understanding of driver requests and provide more natural responses.

The navigation system has also evolved, featuring intelligent route planning that considers charging needs for electric variants. Models equipped with 4MATIC also include a TERRAIN mode and a transparent hood function that virtually displays what lies beneath the front of the vehicle—an invaluable aid during challenging passages.

With this new generation, Mercedes positions the GLA as a central model in its compact lineup. Closer in design to the latest electric offerings from the brand while still capable of accommodating a hybrid powertrain, it aims to meet the needs of a clientele still navigating the balance between energy transition and traditional usage. Alongside the CLA and the upcoming GLB, the SUV is set to become one of the cornerstones of the German automaker's new compact strategy.
