MG Unveils IM5 and IM6: A Bold Step into the Premium Segment
MG is making a bold entry into the premium automotive market with the launch of the IM5 and IM6, showcasing advanced technologies and competitive pricing.

MG is making significant strides in the European automotive market, particularly in France, where it achieved over 35,000 sales last year. The British brand, under Chinese ownership by SAIC, is now a formidable player, ranking in the top 10 for sales in the region, surpassing several long-established competitors. With the introduction of the IM5 and IM6 models, MG is confidently targeting more premium segments, showcasing cutting-edge technologies. We had the opportunity to explore these two new vehicles exclusively.

A Familiar Impression?
The presentation took place in a versatile studio in Seine-Saint-Denis, a space often used for shoots and advertisements by major automotive brands. This choice of venue reflects MG's ambitions for its new models, the IM5 sedan and the IM6 SUV. To illustrate the innovations in these vehicles, MG brought in top specialists. While photographs offer a glimpse, experiencing the cars in person is a different matter altogether. Set against a stark white backdrop, the IM5 and IM6 demand attention, with the logo design evoking nostalgia for the classic series "V: The Visitors." Observers noted similarities to Tesla and Porsche, and some even spotted a hint of the Dodge Viper SRT-10 in the IM5's front lights and bumper design.
Packed with Technology
The term "IM" stands for "Intelligence in Motion," indicating the integration of advanced AI technologies aimed at enhancing the driving experience. The IM5 sedan measures 4.93 meters in length and shares its platform with the IM6 SUV, boasting an impressive drag coefficient of 0.226. MG highlights a digital chassis with a vehicle motion control system capable of managing six dimensions. This includes active and adaptive suspensions with a multi-link rear setup and four-wheel steering.

Continental, a specialist in braking technology, has developed the vehicle's by-wire braking system, which is said to deliver a smooth braking experience akin to that of a Rolls-Royce. MG has tested the IM5 against the challenging "moose test," claiming it achieved a speed of 90 km/h without touching the cones, surpassing the record set by the Citroën Xantia Activa in 1999.
An Abundance of Features
The IM6, slightly shorter at 4.90 meters, features pneumatic suspensions. Inside both vehicles, passengers will find ample space, with the IM5 offering 457 liters of trunk capacity (1,290 liters with the rear seats folded) and the IM6 providing 596 liters (1,640 liters with the seats down). The IM5 also includes a frunk with 18 liters of space, while the IM6 has 32 liters. To enhance comfort, both models come equipped with double-glazed windows that actively reduce noise.
The IM series incorporates a multitude of technologies. MG sources high-quality chips from Snapdragon and Nvidia. The dashboard features a striking 26.3-inch display with impressive fluidity and offers relaxation programs during charging, including massage, scented climate control, and soothing music. Additionally, there are nine cameras and twelve sensors monitoring the vehicle's surroundings, contributing to advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

Impressive Finishing Touches
The vehicles also come with upgraded wireless charging capabilities for smartphones, providing 50W of power. The in-car audio system, a 7.1.4 setup, delivers good sound quality, though it’s surprising that MG did not partner with a renowned audio brand, a common practice among premium manufacturers. Noteworthy features include automatic parking assistance and a night mode that provides clear visuals on the display to eliminate blind spots in various conditions. An advanced heat pump and cooling system adjusts based on the number of passengers to optimize energy efficiency.
Inside the vehicles, the quality of the finish is striking, potentially among the best seen in Chinese-made cars. The upholstery design, inspired by iconic Roche Bobois sofas, was developed in collaboration with the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. This design choice reflects a commitment to quality without excessive flair, offering a welcome sobriety that is not always found in new market entrants.

Astounding Performance and Competitive Pricing
Turning to performance metrics, both the IM5 and IM6 are built on an 800V architecture. They feature a 100 kWh battery capable of accepting a charging power of 396 kW, theoretically allowing a 10 to 80% charge in just 17 minutes. The Hurricane motors, equipped with advanced cooling, produce impressive power outputs. The rear-wheel-drive versions of the IM5 and IM6 deliver 408 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and 5.4 seconds, respectively. The all-wheel-drive variants boast a staggering 752 horsepower and 802 Nm of torque, hitting 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and 3.5 seconds. The claimed ranges are 710 km for the IM5 in rear-wheel drive and 625 km for the IM6. The prices are equally competitive: €53,990 for the IM5 2WD, €59,990 for the 4WD, €56,990 for the IM6 2WD, and €62,990 for the 4WD. MG is eager to see how these models perform against more expensive competitors, who are increasingly struggling to justify their high price tags.
