In Germany, the atmosphere is decidedly mixed, with a façade of cheer masking deeper anxieties. Recent findings from the market research firm Ipsos reveal a spectrum of worries among the populace, ranging from poverty and social inequality to immigration and inflation. These issues dominate the minds of many, while concerns about crime, military conflicts, healthcare, and climate change follow closely behind.

Amidst these serious considerations, one might wonder if the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is a source of anxiety. When asked about the nature of AI-generated text, ChatGPT candidly admits that it doesn’t worry about anything at all. The AI highlights its penchant for certain phrases, such as “opportunities, risks, and challenges,” and notes the frequent use of standard expressions and sentence structures. This transparency about its own limitations contrasts sharply with the human concerns about the future.

Another pressing issue for many is the perceived unfairness in taxation, particularly in the context of owning traditional combustion engine vehicles. Drivers face a barrage of taxes at the fuel pump, including value-added tax, energy tax, CO₂ tax, and indirectly, the THG quota. Meanwhile, electric vehicle (EV) owners enjoy various incentives, such as purchase grants, exemption from vehicle taxes, and minimal taxation on company cars, while benefiting from an expanding charging infrastructure.

Governments are beginning to take notice of the potential revenue losses from these disparities. The UK is moving towards taxing electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles based on mileage, while Austria has integrated electric cars into its motor-related insurance tax since 2025.
