Aston Martin Shows Progress at Hungarian GP Qualifying

Aston Martin has made notable strides during the qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso achieved a significant milestone by advancing to Q2 for the first time with the new upgrade package, finishing in 16th place. This development was viewed positively by Alonso, who believes it reflects the effectiveness of the team's ongoing development efforts. Meanwhile, teammate Lance Stroll, who finished 20th, was unable to reach Q2 but also recognized encouraging signs.

Alonso expressed optimism about the weekend's performance, stating, "Getting into Q2 is a step in the right direction. We are still working on optimizing the new package, and there is more potential in the car. It feels more consistent and predictable now, making it easier to drive. Tomorrow we will continue to learn and see what we can achieve in the race."

Stroll echoed Alonso's sentiments, noting, "The car definitely feels like a step forward with more downforce and grip, which is positive." He mentioned that during his crucial lap, he was on track for Q2 until he was caught off guard by a gust of wind in Turn 12. "The car just wouldn’t turn, and I couldn’t complete the lap. We still lack some engine power, and there’s room for improvement in balance—especially after losing driving time yesterday. Still, it’s encouraging to see that we are making progress. Hopefully, we can build on this tomorrow."

Technical chief Adrian Newey also shared a cautiously optimistic outlook, stating, "We came here with the goal of being able to compete with the midfield teams. Reaching Q2 for the first time is therefore an encouraging step." He expressed satisfaction with Alonso's performance, noting, "Fernando got the maximum out of the car today."

Newey also recognized Stroll's improvement despite limited track time: "Lance was able to improve as well, even after his restricted driving time on Friday, before being caught out by a gust into the gravel. We need to continue developing the upgrade package, knowing that there is still more potential to tap into."
