F1 2026 – Hungarian Qualifying: Norris Claims First Pole of the Year, Hamilton Penalized

Significant Improvements Pay Off

The qualifying session at the Hungaroring proved to be one of the most intense of the 2026 season, culminating in Lando Norris securing his first pole position of the year. The reigning world champion demonstrated exceptional skill in the final moments of the session, benefiting from notable upgrades to his McLaren.

This marks McLaren's first pole of the season, attributed to substantial enhancements in their car's floor and aerodynamic package, including their own version of the rear wing dubbed "Macarena." Norris managed to clinch the necessary time on his last lap, while his competitors failed to improve, showcasing a remarkable performance.

Ferrari started the weekend strong, with Lewis Hamilton setting the fastest times in the first two practice sessions. The SF-26's agility in slow and medium-speed corners suited the circuit perfectly. Hamilton initially took pole after the first run of Q3, but did not improve in his second attempt, misjudging the timing as the track conditions improved towards the end of the session. Ultimately, Hamilton lost out on pole by a mere 12 thousandths of a second, and to add to his woes, he received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri during a fast lap.

Challenges for Verstappen and Russell

Charles Leclerc, who was just two-tenths behind Hamilton, will start alongside him on the front row, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli will begin in fourth, just 30 thousandths behind the Monegasque. Antonelli faced some misfortune during the session; while improving his time on his second lap, he had to lift off due to a brief yellow flag caused by Max Verstappen's spin on his final attempt. The championship leader is also under investigation for a potential infringement during the yellow flag period.

Verstappen qualified in sixth place, with George Russell in seventh. Russell, who has struggled throughout the session, was forced to stop his Mercedes on track due to a technical issue during his last lap, raising further concerns about the reliability of the Mercedes cars. This ongoing struggle for Russell could heighten tensions within the team, especially as Toto Wolff expressed no reservations about potentially pairing Verstappen with Antonelli at Mercedes amidst the upcoming transfer market frenzy.

Alonso Sparks Hope for Aston Martin

Completing the top ten were Isack Hadjar in eighth, Arvid Lindblad in ninth for Racing Bulls, and Nico Hülkenberg in tenth for Audi. Fernando Alonso had a positive outing, qualifying for Q2 for the first time this season and securing sixteenth place for the upcoming Grand Prix. This achievement came after significant enhancements were made to his car, with 16 aerodynamic upgrades introduced, including a redesigned front wing, nose, brake ducts, diffuser, sidepods, suspension, air intake, and rear wing.

Qualifying Results

Notably, several drivers failed to advance past Q1, including the Haas cars of Oliver Bearman (seventeenth), the Williams duo of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon (eighteenth and nineteenth), Lance Stroll from Aston Martin (twentieth), and the Cadillac drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez (twenty-first and twenty-second).

In Q2, Alonso will line up behind Esteban Ocon's Haas (fifteenth), Gabriel Bortoleto's Audi (fourteenth), Franco Colapinto's Alpine (thirteenth), Pierre Gasly (twelfth), and Liam Lawson's Racing Bull (eleventh).

Both Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton received three-place grid penalties for failing to respect yellow flags during Verstappen's spin.
