Mercedes GLA Electric: Competitive Pricing for a Premium SUV with Up to 657 km Range

Mercedes has officially launched the new GLA electric SUV in France. Drawing inspiration from the recently unveiled CLA, this compact SUV introduces a new generation of technologies within the German automaker's lineup. With ultra-fast charging capabilities, an 800-volt architecture, and a potential range of up to 657 kilometers, the GLA aims to carve out a significant presence in a growing market of electric SUVs. Notably, its starting price allows it to qualify for ecological bonuses.

Three Electric Variants at Launch

The new Mercedes GLA kicks off its journey exclusively with electric powertrains. While a hybrid variant is planned for the future, it will join the lineup at a later date. For now, customers can select from three distinct versions.

The entry-level model, named GLA 200, features a 58 kWh LFP battery paired with a motor that produces 224 horsepower. Mercedes claims a maximum range of 444 kilometers based on the WLTP cycle.

Next up is the GLA 250+, which comes equipped with an 85 kWh NMC battery and delivers 271 horsepower. This variant is touted as the most efficient in the lineup, with a range that can reach 657 kilometers. Finally, the GLA 350 4MATIC boasts two electric motors for a total output of 353 horsepower, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds while still maintaining an impressive range of 641 kilometers.

The lineup is set to expand in the coming months with the introduction of a 71 kWh battery expected in 2027, followed by the launch of hybrid variants.

Similar to the new CLA, the GLA is built on an 800-volt electric architecture. This technology enables it to support charging powers of up to 320 kW for models equipped with the larger battery. The GLA 200 can achieve charging powers of 200 kW, allowing it to go from 10% to 80% charge in about 20 minutes. Mercedes also notes that under optimal charging conditions, drivers can recover up to 270 kilometers of range in just ten minutes.

Aggressive Positioning Against Competitors

Mercedes has strategically priced its new SUV to remain competitive. The GLA 200 starts at €44,400, a price point that keeps it below the threshold for ecological bonuses—a rarity for a premium model built on an 800-volt platform.

With this pricing, the German manufacturer positions its SUV favorably against some of its key rivals. For comparison, the Audi Q4 e-tron starts at €45,990, built on a less efficient 400-volt architecture for fast charging.

For those seeking more range, the GLA 250+ is available starting at €50,700. However, this price excludes it from ecological bonuses despite its impressive 657 kilometers of range. The GLA 350 4MATIC, which focuses more on performance with its all-wheel drive and 353 horsepower, is priced from €54,700.

With this new generation of the GLA, Mercedes aims to make its latest innovations more accessible. By offering an entry-level version eligible for purchase incentives without compromising on cutting-edge technology, the automaker may strengthen its position in the fiercely competitive premium electric SUV segment.
