Mercedes Unveils New Safety Car for Formula 1

On July 23, 2026, Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG marked a significant milestone in motorsport by introducing the latest Official FIA F1 Safety Car, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+. This model continues the legacy of safety in Formula 1, celebrating 30 years of commitment to this crucial aspect of the sport. The GT 63 PRO is the 14th vehicle to take on the role of Safety Car and will make its debut during the Formula 1 AWS Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest, replacing the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which served since 2022 and completed 51 deployments, including its last appearance at the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ is engineered for exceptional performance and handling, boasting a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine that produces 450 kW (612 hp) and delivers a peak torque of 850 Nm. Its AMG ceramic high-performance braking system ensures reliable performance even under the most demanding conditions. Power is transferred through the AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission, while the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system enhances traction in both dry and wet conditions.

In terms of agility and precision, the GT 63 PRO is designed to excel in challenging track conditions. Its remarkable handling characteristics make it an ideal choice for Safety Car duties, allowing for precise control at high speeds.

One of the standout features of the new Safety Car is the integration of signal lights into the rear wing, providing high visibility without compromising aerodynamic efficiency. Additional LED lights are strategically placed in the front and rear to enhance visibility during races. The green and orange light modules serve specific functions: orange indicates a no-overtaking situation, while green signals that overtaking is allowed. The system also includes dimmable lights that adapt to varying light conditions, improving communication with drivers.

The aerodynamics of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ has been optimized for its role as an Official FIA F1 Safety Car. Modifications include a new front splitter, an active flap on the rear wing, and dive planes that generate additional downforce at the front, enhancing stability in fast corners.

The car's cooling system meets the high demands of track use, while the AMG Active Ride Control with active roll stabilization allows for precise tuning of the suspension. Bernd Mayländer, the long-time Official FIA F1 Safety Car driver, notes that these enhancements contribute to a more dynamic driving experience without sacrificing safety or comfort.

For critical communication with race control, the vehicle is equipped with advanced FIA-specific systems, including a centralized control panel in the center console that integrates radio, GPS, and camera technology. The FIA tablets used by the driver have been enlarged for quicker, more intuitive operation. Safety features include a roll cage, six-point seat belts, and RECARO racing seats, along with a fuel tank designed for safety in racing conditions. The Official FIA F1 Safety Car is fitted with Pirelli P Zero R tires, developed for high performance on the racetrack.

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, two modified Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ vehicles will be on standby, both featuring a special anniversary design that pays homage to the 30-year history of Mercedes Safety Cars in Formula 1. The striking black finish is accented with red detailing, alongside the CrowdStrike branding and a commemorative logo on the hood, roof, and rear wing.
