The New Audi Q9: A Colossal SUV for the American Market

In the competitive landscape of the American automotive market, size matters, especially when it comes to SUVs. Audi has recognized this necessity with the launch of the Q9, a vehicle that measures a substantial 5.31 meters in length and 2.21 meters in width, designed to cater to the demands of American consumers. This new model not only represents a significant addition to Audi's lineup but also reflects broader industry trends that prioritize local manufacturing and adaptability to market needs.
The Q9's introduction comes at a time when tariffs on imports from Europe and Mexico are notably high—17.5% and 27.5% respectively. Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, has indicated that establishing a manufacturing facility in the United States is essential for both Audi and its sister brand, Porsche. He emphasized that the era of a single global vehicle model is over, leading to increasingly complex requirements for vehicle specifications and powertrains across different markets.
Döllner has called for more clarity from European lawmakers regarding regulations that affect local production. He advocates for a level playing field against protectionist tendencies and seeks to alleviate unnecessary burdens, such as intrusive surveillance systems and challenging production conditions.
The Q9 is not just another large SUV; it aims to redefine luxury in this segment. With a focus on spaciousness and comfort, the Q9 comes standard with seven seats, and an option for six individual seats. All seating arrangements can be adjusted electrically and are heated, ensuring comfort for all passengers. The vehicle’s doors feature electric opening mechanisms, which enhance convenience, especially in tight spaces.
In terms of performance, the Q9 will initially launch in Germany with a three-liter six-cylinder diesel engine producing 299 horsepower, paired with all-wheel drive and air suspension for added comfort. The starting price is set at €108,400. By spring, a V6 gasoline engine with approximately 435 horsepower and a plug-in hybrid variant will join the lineup. Additionally, a high-performance 4-liter V8 engine with 600 horsepower will be available in the SQ9 variant, which will feature Pirelli tires sized up to 315/30 R23. However, this powerful option will be exclusive to the American market, where diesel engines are not offered.
