On a chilly morning, I donned my black gloves and reviewed my notes on a DIY oil change without a catch pan. The day before, I had poured in Castrol Edge 5W-30, but I soon realized a simple mistake: I had compared two oils without changing the Mann HU 718/5 x filter in one of the tests.

The Testing Protocol

I completed three sequences of 10,000 kilometers using the same engine, a 2.0 diesel, and followed the same routes. My driving included the ring road, the A86, and a 12 km loop for daily short trips. Every 1,000 kilometers, after stopping the engine for 10 minutes, I checked the oil level on flat ground.

I maintained the same viscosity of 5W-30, followed a consistent filling procedure, and matched the starting temperature whenever possible. I excluded comparisons where the manufacturer specifications varied, particularly between ACEA C3 and VW 504.00. Without this filtering, I risked mixing two narratives that did not align.

I also noted two practical details. On one occasion, the new cartridge felt warm to the touch when I screwed it in. Another time, I used a small magnetic LED lamp positioned on the left fender to read the gauge without burning my fingers.

Initial Misleading Signals

During the first few mornings, the ticking of the lifters lasted about 4 seconds upon starting before settling into idle. This sound was particularly noticeable when the car was parked outside in temperatures around 2 °C. After an 18-minute drive, the three oils began to sound much more similar.

I initially thought that the Motul 8100 X-clean+ 5W-30 was smoother. However, I later realized that the new filter contributed as much as the synthetic oil. This was a moment of clarity; my first assessment had been too hasty. I had mistaken a contextual effect for a product effect.

I repeated the same round trip using TotalEnergies Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30. The noise upon waking varied slightly, but not enough to establish a consistent pattern. Environmental factors like morning wind, cold, and outdoor parking clearly influenced the results. I could not arrive at a more definitive conclusion.

Findings from the Data

In the best scenario, I added only 300 mL over 10,000 kilometers. For the most heavily driven engine, I ended up close to 1 liter for the same distance. The oil level tended to drop significantly after a series of short trips, but stabilized during longer drives.

I did not observe a clear difference of 0.2 L/100 km in fuel consumption. I attempted to track this at the pump but eventually abandoned that line of inquiry. Traffic, cold weather, and my right foot muddled the readings too much for me to take them seriously.

After accumulating 30,000 kilometers, my conclusion is straightforward. For a high-mileage engine and short trips, the key takeaway is to use properly certified oil, maintain the same filter, and test during the same season, even without reaching high engine speeds. Between Castrol, Motul, and TotalEnergies, perceived differences primarily manifest during cold starts. Beyond 18 minutes, the oils exhibit much more similarity, and this became my main point of reference.
