Jaguar's Electric Renaissance: The Type 01 Unveiled

Jaguar, the renowned British automaker, is poised for a remarkable transformation as it prepares to introduce a new era of electric vehicles. Following the gradual retirement of its entire lineup, the brand is set to launch the Type 01, a new flagship electric sedan. After witnessing the Jaguar Type 01 in action at the Monaco ePrix, the company has now revealed details about its interior.

A New Beginning

The designation of Type 01 signifies Jaguar's commitment to establishing a new lineage with this model. This marks Jaguar's second electric vehicle, arriving after the cessation of production for all combustion engine models in its catalog. For several months, Jaguar has halted production to focus on future developments.

The Type 01 is intended to rejuvenate the brand, representing a significant shift as the first vehicle following this transition, hence its numerical name that moves away from the traditional alphabetical designations. The interior design is also set to break from the past.

Jaguar aims to redefine its cabin experience, steering clear of the simplistic designs often found in electric vehicles. The cockpit will feature a large display for the driver, complemented by a central control panel reminiscent of a smartphone in size. Notably, the vehicle will omit the traditional rearview mirror, opting instead for a ClearSight screen located at the base of the windshield. This unconventional positioning may help drivers keep their eyes on the road while maintaining visibility.

A Four-Seat Sanctuary

Inside the Jaguar Type 01, a prominent central console extends from the dashboard, dividing the space towards the rear seats. This design element resembles the transmission tunnel found in early versions of the Porsche Panamera, which was also limited to four seats, or the Fisker Karma, which housed its battery in a similar manner.

The utility of this central console remains uncertain. It is possible that Jaguar could integrate battery cells within this structure to optimize battery capacity without elevating the driving position, which typically occurs when the battery is placed under the floor. However, offering a four-seat configuration may deter some potential buyers. Porsche has recognized this trend and now offers the Panamera in a five-seat Sport Turismo variant.

Additionally, Jaguar has subtly updated its brand identity, moving away from the prominent leaping Jaguar emblem typically found on its logos. The logo has been discreetly incorporated into the door panels and on the steering wheel.

The prototype of the Type 01 is scheduled for public unveiling during the Monterey Car Week in California, with an appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 16. These prototypes will closely resemble those showcased in Monaco. The production version of the Jaguar Type 01 is set to be revealed in New York on October 6.
