Pirelli Develops Custom Tires for the Porsche Cayenne Electric Turbo
Pirelli has developed a custom tire range for the Porsche Cayenne Electric Turbo, designed to handle its impressive performance and instant torque. The collaboration results in six tailored tire options, including the high-performance P Zero R.

The Porsche Cayenne Electric Turbo marks a significant evolution in the automaker's lineup, being the first fully electric version of its renowned SUV. With impressive performance capabilities, this model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, presenting a new challenge for tire manufacturers.
To address this challenge, Pirelli has created a specialized range of tires in collaboration with Porsche engineers. These tires are designed to manage not only the weight and performance of the large electric SUV but also the immense torque that its motors can deliver in an instant. This collaboration has resulted in a sophisticated project featuring six distinct tire options, including summer, winter, and all-season variants, all developed through a fully virtual design process.
The Demands of an Electric SUV
High-performance electric SUVs like the Cayenne Electric must simultaneously handle significant weight, instant torque, all-wheel drive, rapid acceleration, and considerable dynamic loads. The Cayenne Electric also incorporates an advanced chassis equipped with systems that can adjust vehicle dynamics and torque management within milliseconds. In this context, tires play a crucial role in the overall system. Therefore, Pirelli worked closely with Porsche to develop tailored solutions based on the specific version, size, axle, and intended use of the vehicle.
Six Tailored Tire Options for the Cayenne Electric
The partnership between Pirelli and Porsche has led to the creation of six specific tire configurations. This lineup includes the fifth generation of the P Zero, available in 21 and 22-inch sizes, and the sportier P Zero R, designed exclusively for the Cayenne Electric Turbo. Additionally, it features two winter tires and an all-season option. All products incorporate Pirelli Elect technology, which is a suite of solutions developed for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
A tire designed for an electric vehicle must combine low rolling resistance, grip, load-bearing capacity, torque management, durability, and acoustic comfort. These requirements can often conflict with one another, making development particularly complex. Pirelli's tires were designed using a fully virtual process, allowing for the simulation and analysis of numerous variables before physical prototypes were created. This approach not only shortens development times but also enables precise adjustments in the design of compounds and structures.
P Zero: Balancing Efficiency and Porsche Performance
For those seeking a balance between performance, efficiency, and everyday usability, Pirelli offers the new P Zero, available in 21 and 22-inch sizes. Notably, this tire is not identical on both axles, featuring specific configurations for the front and rear. The front tire focuses on efficiency, utilizing low rolling resistance compounds to minimize energy consumption and extend battery range. Meanwhile, the rear tire emphasizes driving dynamics, ensuring the Cayenne Electric retains the expected Porsche handling during demanding maneuvers, such as high-speed lane changes. Wet safety is also a critical consideration for an SUV intended for daily use.
The P Zero R: Unleashing the True Potential of the Cayenne Turbo
While the P Zero represents a compromise, the P Zero R is engineered to fully exploit the capabilities of the Cayenne Electric Turbo. Available in a 22-inch size, it features specific configurations for both the front and rear axles. Pirelli's engineers have developed an Ultra High Performance compound drawing from motorsport experience, closely related to that used in the Porsche 911. The goal is to ensure maximum grip, taking into account that the Cayenne Electric is significantly heavier than a 911, thus facing different stresses.
According to Pirelli, the P Zero R offers performance close to that of the P Zero Trofeo RS, a semi-slick tire from the high-performance range. The compound used in the 911 was not simply transferred to the Cayenne; rather, Pirelli adapted it to suit the characteristics of the electric SUV, particularly its increased weight and unique wear requirements. This adaptation included maximizing the contact patch and utilizing different compounds for the front and rear axles to effectively convert the instant torque from the electric motors into optimal longitudinal thrust.
Six Tires, One Philosophy
The development of the first electric Cayenne illustrates the evolving approach to tire design. It is no longer sufficient to simply consider dimensions and maximum speed. With electric vehicles, new variables come into play: weight, instant torque, range, regeneration, noise, and energy management. In the case of the Cayenne Electric, all these factors must align with Porsche's philosophy of precision, stability, and performance.
